Refuge Update / Friends Meeting

Hello Refuge Friends and Volunteers! This is National Volunteer Week and furthermore Global Volunteer Month. A big “THANK YOU” to everyone who has volunteered their time to the Refuge and community to make this a better place. Last year you logged over 300 volunteer hours on the Refuge, we truly could not do what we do without you!

Winona Earth Day – Saturday, April 22 – 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Jaycee Pavilion on East Lake Winona. The Friends of the Refuge Headwaters will have a table at the Earth Day event. Stop by and say “hi.”

Project COMPASS Fishing – Wednesday, May 10 – 5:00 – 6:15 p.m. – Huff Street dock, Winona – We are looking for volunteers to help with the annual Project COMPASS fishing event. It is always a great time and usually lots of fish are caught. Please let me know if you can help!

Robinson Lake Public Meeting – Wednesday, May 17 – 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. – Wabasha/Kellogg High School – If you are interested in learning about the habitat restoration projects being proposed for the Robinson and Big Lake areas of Pool 4, please join us for the public meeting hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Project COMPASS Fishing and Picnic – Wednesday, June 7 – 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. – Hiawatha Valley Marines Shelter, West Lake Winona. We are looking for volunteers to help with fishing and serving food. Please let me know if you are available to help.

Damsels and Dragons – Dan Jackson, dragonfly researcher and expert, Winona History Center – Wednesday, June 21 – 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. – Mark your calendars! This program was last offered in February of 2020 and was a hit. More details will be available as we get closer. Sponsored by the Friends group.

The next regular Friends Meeting is Thursday, April 27 beginning at 4:15 p.m. at the Refuge Office, 102 Walnut Street, Suite 205, Winona. The meeting agenda is here. This is a great meeting to learn about upcoming events and programs and help shape them. Hope to see some of you there!
