Refuge Updates

Friend and Volunteer Sue O’Brien led a great paddling event last week and will be offering another one on Thursday, August 4 beginning at 9:30am from the Verchota Landing on the Prairie Island Dike. Registration is required by contacting Leslie Watson. Click here for details.

Ranger Katie from the LaCrosse District will be offering a Wildflower Walk at the Refuge Visitor Center in Onalaska on Tuesday, July 26 at 6:00pm Registration is required by giving Katie a call at 608-779-2391. There is a great trail leading from the Visitor Center if you want to explore on your own at another time.  Click here for the news release.

A big “Thank You” to Winona Scout Troop 13 for their efforts in cleaning up a dump site on the Refuge near Garvin Brook in MN City. It was a wet day but they and Biological Science Technicians Hannah and TJ collected three pickup truck loads of trash!

Mark your calendars for Sunday, August 21! The Friends of the Refuge Headwaters has been selected to be the nonprofit recipients of the H3O Jazz Jam held at Island City Brewing Company (65 East Front Street) in Winona from 2:30 – 5:30pm. More details will follow but in a nutshell, the money you put in the tip jar will be tripled and given to the Friends group to do good things!
